Job Description |
|
The Materials Library is a handling collection of some of the most wondrous materials on earth, gathered from sheds, kitchens, workshops, labs and factories around the world. The original Materials Library collection is based in our Bloomsbury workshop, with a second collection currently being built inside our Stratford workshop.
As Materials Library Creative Lead you will be responsible for a mix of creative display, collections management, and communication and engagement work across both sites. You will be responsible for creating playful and engaging multi-sensory materials displays, and imaginatively improving our digital catalogue and other user interfaces to make them enticing to multidisciplinary staff, students and public audiences. You will also be responsible for the day-to-day administration and care of the collections and will be the first point of contact for eclectic and wonderful enquiries about materials from our members and public audiences.
This role would be perfect for someone from a creative background who has a flair for the visual, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a broad understanding of materials and processes. The ideal candidate would be someone enthusiastic, flexible and organised who thrives when doing a mix of creative hands-on tasks and administrative, organisational work.
You will work closely with our Head of Materials Library Sarah, as well as the rest of our small, dynamic, friendly and supportive Institute of Making team.
About you
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following criteria:
• Excellent understanding and appreciation of a broad range of materials, their properties, and making processes.
• Experience of creating engaging, playful and thoughtful multi-sensory displays, installations or artworks with a range of materials or objects.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex materials-related content to a wide variety of people.
• Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills, with an ability to deliver projects to a high standard, on time and on budget.
All applications must include a supporting statement telling us, using examples, how you meet the essential criteria listed in the job description. Applications without a supporting statement will be rejected.
About the role
In this dynamic role, the post-holder will manage the day-to-day administration and operation of the materials Library collections including caring for, labelling and cleaning the physical samples, organising the storage systems, and updating and maintaining databases across the Bloomsbury and Stratford sites.
The post-holder should be highly organised with a keen attention to detail. They should have highly developed interpersonal skills and should be approachable, enthusiastic and able to work with a wide range of people.
In addition, the postholder will focus on creating playful and engaging multi-sensory materials displays and imaginatively improving the Materials Library's digital catalogue and other user interfaces to make them enticing to multidisciplinary staff and students at UCL, as well as our growing public audiences. |
