Job title: Curator, Photography and New Media
Division: Collection
Supervisor: Associate Director, Collection
Job Status: Contract, 3 years, full-time (35 hours per week)
Posting Period: August 23 to September 22, 2024
Job entry: Fall 2024

Mandate
Based on its extensive Collection, exhibitions, programs, and research opportunities, the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) is a leading voice in advancing knowledge, promoting public understanding, and widening thought and debate on architecture, its history, theory, practice, and role in society today. The guiding purpose of the Collection is to make comprehensive and integrated bodies of material available for advanced, interdisciplinary research in order to reveal the changing character of thought, culture, and intellectual circles of the past, and point to the future of architectural thinking and practice.

Job summary/Purpose of the job
The main responsibilities of this position are to provide leadership to develop a coherent and long-term strategy for the acquisitions and commissions for the Photography collection (including digital, video, Instagram and other formats), as well as a curatorial strategy for exhibiting and writing on the photography collection. The photography collection is a distinct part of the Collection, but the incumbent advises on photography in (institutional) archives, prints & drawings and the library holdings. These activities are strongly related to the curatorial direction of the institution.

The incumbent plans, coordinates and manages all aspects of the acquisition process for the Photography collection and supervises the activities and projects related to the photography collection. In doing so, the incumbent collaborates actively with the curatorial and editorial, collection and research divisions.
  Required Skills / Qualifications

• An expertise in the culture and discourse of architecture, as well as an expertise on the evolution of photographic media (digital, video, etc.)
• Number of years of relevant experience required: 5 to 7 years with progressive curatorial responsibilities within a major photo collection
• Ability to work effectively in English and French or willingness to learn; knowledge of additional modern European languages is an asset
