Other Benefits:Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Some evening, weekend and public holiday work may be required for which time off in lieu applies.

Holiday allowance: 25 days’ annual leave (plus 8 statutory public holidays).
Probationary period: 6 months
Notice period: 1 month during the probationary period and 6 months thereafter.

  Job Description
The Director is responsible for providing active leadership and effective management of the Museum and its staff.

STRATEGY & DEVELOPMENT
• Lead the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan.
• Lead fundraising from trusts, foundations, public funders, and individual donors.
• Lead and oversee marketing, press and PR for the Museum.
• Oversee the development and promotion of commercial opportunities.
• Ensure the future viability of the Museum through effective financial management and generating funds for new developments.
• Ensure excellent relationships with key stakeholders and partners.

MANAGEMENT
• Ensure the smooth and effective running of the Museum and its programme in line with Accreditation requirements and Health & Safety legislation.
• Ensure the care and development of the historic buildings and collections.
• Provide strong leadership and management to the staff team.
• Ensure that sound staff policies are effectively carried out and regularly reviewed in line with employment legislation.
• Advise the Board on matters relating to pay and rewards.
• Oversee the recruitment, training and appropriate management of staff and volunteers.

FINANCE
• Develop and produce a rolling long-term financial strategy and plan, in consultation with the Finance & Operations Committee, for the Board.
• Produce and monitor an agreed annual budget.
• Oversee the presentation of regular financial reports to the Board and the Finance & Operations Committee.
• Report to the Finance & Operations Committee on key policies such as the Museum’s risk register.
• Work with the Museum’s auditors to ensure the timely and compliant production of annual accounts and annual returns to the Charity Commission and Companies House.
• Oversee and ensure the effective management of cash and investments.
• Act as signatory on bank accounts and authorise payments.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS
• Act as an ambassador for the Museum, including media and PR opportunities.
• Maintain and develop existing and new networks – locally, nationally and internationally - and build increased awareness for the Museum.
• Seek opportunities for the Chair of the Board and other key personnel to promote the Museum.
• Manage stakeholder and funder relationships.
• Develop strategic partnerships.

GOVERNANCE
• Ensure the Museum operates in compliance with all regulatory requirements, advising the Board accordingly.
• Work closely with the Board through regular meetings with the Chair, and attendance at Committee and Board meetings.
• Assist the Chair and the Board with the recruitment and induction of new Board members.
• Prepare Board and Committee reports as necessary.

GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS
Contract: This is a full-time permanent contract.
Please note: due to the nature of the organisation and size of the staff team, it is not possible for this role to be undertaken remotely. Subject to successful completion of the probationary period, very occasional homeworking may be arranged around the needs of the Museum.

  Required Skills / Qualifications

ESSENTIAL
• Extensive experience in the cultural sector at a senior level. Ability to think strategically with experience of setting and managing budgets and finances.
• Strong commercial acumen and entrepreneurial flair.
• Proven track record in income generation through core activity as well as ancillary and commercial income streams.
• Proven track record in fundraising for core work and significant projects.
• Strong communication skills with excellent interpersonal, negotiating and influencing skills, with the ability to build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.
• Experience of being the public face of an organisation and media relations.
• Experience of staff development and team building, with strong practical HR knowledge and skills.
• Proven track record in audience development and growth, and an understanding of the diverse interests and needs of museum visitors.
• Some knowledge of, and engagement with, the work of Charles Dickens and an understanding of how to interpret and promote this within a museum setting.
Understanding of the digital space and its role in museums/heritage and culture.
• Experience of working with a Board. Commitment to equality, equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office suite.

DESIRABLE
• Experience of working in a museum or heritage context.
• Experience of managing historic/listed buildings.
