The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum is a welcoming social and cultural space where everyone can discover, learn, and enjoy as visitors, co-producers, artists, and makers.
We are looking for creative dynamic individual committed to participatory practice to engage Cheltenham’s communities in the National Lottery Heritage Funded ‘Cheltenham’s BIG Museum Project’. The Community Facilitator (Arts and Heritage) will be joining a small team with a big ambition to develop the Wilson into one of the South West’s most pioneering and ambitious art gallery and museums.
They will have knowledge and experience of community consultation and engagement. They will be familiar with the challenges and opportunities relating to audience development and community engagement initiatives and will be confident in engaging communities with The Wilson’s diverse collections and programmes. They will have excellent interpersonal skills, with a passion for working with people from a range of backgrounds and experiences. The Community Facilitator (Arts and Heritage) will contribute to delivering the co-curated collections galleries reinterpretation and for informing our collections and engagement strategy through their community engagement work.

Key duties and responsibilities:
• To deliver community engagement work focused on under-served audiences in Cheltenham.
• Develop new and existing relationships with at least 6 community groups.
• Develop a series of workshops to explore the collections with participants.
• Working with the curatorial and programming teams, support the delivery of temporary co-curated displays.
• Support the reinterpretation and redisplay of the collections galleries (due to open in early 2026).
• Provide insight from community groups and participation work to help develop the collections and engagement strategy for The Wilson.
• Facilitate community consultation with the development of relevant strategies and policies, with particular emphasis on making recommendations for revisions to the Collections Development Policy, based on feedback from project participants.
• Identify opportunities for community engagement which meet community needs.
• Assist with the promotion of community engagement activity through marketing and social media.
• Support the evaluation and adaption of exhibition and display content according to visitor feedback and broader audience development strategies.
• Support the external evaluation consultant/s to gather feedback and evidence.
General accountabilities:
• To travel across Cheltenham to deliver the responsibilities of the post in an agreed timely manner.
• Support financial administration including raising of Purchase Orders and liaison with suppliers.
• Be an effective advocate for The Cheltenham Trust, and the collections at a local and national level, to special interest groups, and supporting the development and maintenance of effective partnerships.
• Keep abreast of Museum industry developments and trends.
• Produce regular reports and updates as required for meetings, committees, and funding requirements.
• Take personal responsibility for following the Cheltenham Trust environmental sustainability policy.
• To undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time commensurate with the level of the post.

Required Skills / Qualifications |
|
• Experience of community consultation and engagement, including project planning and delivery with community groups.
• Knowledge of safeguarding in community focused projects.
• Knowledge of audience development and community engagement initiatives used as best practice in the heritage and cultural sector.
• Excellent organisation and planning skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for establishing and maintaining positive relationships with community groups.
• Readiness to work with people from a range of backgrounds and experiences and the ability to respond with sensitivity to differing needs.
• Experience of managing budgets.
• Commitment to equality and diversity and an understanding of how this commitment applies to this role. |
