Summary:
In 2021, a new archive and research facility combined our entire collection onto one site for the first time, revolutionising its management and growth. The Research & Enquiries Officer will work within our Curatorial Team to provide research services to our users, answering public research enquiries and facilitating in-person research visits, including the provision of support for military Battlefield Study Days. The postholder will also work with the Collection Manager to enhance catalogue records and provide research support to the rest of the Museum team. They will work with the Marketing & Events Officer on the promotion of Research and Enquiry Services and liaise with our Visitor Services Manager over the availability of the Pasley Study Centre for venue hire. They may also have some volunteer supervision responsibility.
Responsibilities:
Public Enquiries Service:
• Answer public historical and collection-based enquiries received via the website, social media, email and post in line with the Museum’s enquiries policy.
• Ensure that enquiries are well researched, applying charges when necessary, and that each is answered in a timely fashion and in line with museum policy.
• Disseminate to the appropriate colleague all public enquiries (e.g. historic, reprographic requests, group and venue hire requests) from the Museum website contact us page.
Research Services:
• Liaise with researchers to schedule and facilitate in-person research visits to the Museum’s Pasley Study Centre.
• Ensure that material requested in advance is ready to be viewed and retrieve any items requested on the day.
• Ensure that all items viewed are returned to their permanent location at the end of each research visit.
• Supervise researchers in the Pasley Study Centre.
Collection research and understanding:
• Work with colleagues in the Collections team to improve our understanding of the Collection, ensuring that research undertaken for public enquiries is captured and stored appropriately, enhancing Collection records and data.
• Support the creation and maintenance of accurate and up to date catalogue records for the whole collection, updating, correcting and enhancing records as required.
• Support colleagues researching Corps History and the Collection for other areas of Museum work including marketing, social media, membership newsletters
and exhibitions.
Budget and fundraising:
• Support Museum management on wider Museum fundraising appeals.
General:
• Some supervisory responsibilities for volunteers.
• Support with general office administration, including processing mail.
• Inclusion on the emergency response call out procedure for the Museum, with contact details on the Museum call out list. |

Required Skills / Qualifications |
|
1. Experience of Museum or Archive documentation and cataloguing including all aspects of object entry, accession, retrospective cataloguing and digitisation. Knowledge of ADLIB is preferred. (Highly desirable)
2. Experience of working with computerised databases and manual catalogue records. (Essential)
3. Experience of working with and handling Museum objects and archives. (Essential)
4. Previous experience in managing your own work and working on your own initiative. (Essential)
5. Good first degree in history or a related discipline. (Highly desirable)
6. Knowledge of or interest in the Armed Forces’ history and heritage. (Desirable)
7. Experience of volunteer supervision. (Desirable)
8. Experience of Library indexing systems such as UDC. (Desirable)
9. Attention to detail with the ability to spot inaccuracies and an appreciation of the importance of well-maintained collections documentation. (Essential)
10. Self-motivation and an ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines without supervision. (Essential)
11. High written and oral communication skills, including drafting. (Essential)
12. Excellent interpersonal and team working skills with an emphasis on Customer Service.(Essential)
13. Ability to manage workload; prioritising and organising projects/time for the best outcome.(Essential)
14. Excellent research and analytical skills. (Essential) |
