  Job Description
Are you passionate about conserving and caring for objects, artefacts and specimens? Do you champion access and engagement of museum collections? Would you want to work with an enthusiastic and creative curatorial team in a busy, aspirational museum service?

We are looking for a new Conservator for our museum collections and buildings – could that be you?

This role offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Conservator interested in new challenges with a creative approach. Our nationally significant collections chart both the human and natural histories of Colchester. From stone age artefacts to contemporary costume, fossils to spirit specimens, these collections inspire and inform our visitors. You will play an active role with these collections: from acquisition and exhibition to rationalisation and digital access.

You will be responsible for all aspects of collections care at Colchester Museums. Based in our Conservation Lab, at our Museum Resource Centre, you’ll need to also regularly visit and work at our museum sites: Colchester Castle (a Scheduled Monument), the Natural History Museum, Hollytrees Museum and Colchester’s Town Hall (all Listed Buildings).

You will be responsible for the safe and effective running of our conservation laboratory, shared with the curatorial team. It will be up to you to administer a busy programme of remedial and preventative care for our collections and historic venues. You’ll need to manage a complex workload, from routine object interventions and environmental monitoring, to major projects such as exhibition and loan installation. Utilising your professional skill set, you’ll also need think creatively and strategically about how you approach the long-term management collections. Working together as a team, we’ll ensure that we are sharing these amazing collections with our diverse audiences, whilst safeguarding them for the future.

We welcome applicants who can demonstrate their experience of diverse object treatment and understanding of conserving a broad spectrum of collections. Most importantly you’ll want to work together, in a supportive curatorial team, with diverse colleagues, stakeholders and partners.

(Colchester City Council has a wide range of services and facilities that can involve dealing with children or vulnerable adults. We treat our obligations for the safety of children and vulnerable adults seriously and expect our staff to be committed to the principles of our published policies and to adhere to the procedures contained within them.)
  Required Skills / Qualifications
For this role we expect you to have:-

• Recognised professional conservation qualification to degree level, or equivalent experience, with emphasis on remedial/interventive conservation.

We also hope that you have:-

• Relevant post-graduate professional experience in a museum context.
• Professional Accreditation of Conservator-Restorers (PACR) accreditation/working towards professional accreditation.

Further role-specific skills and attributes are available on the role Job Accountability Statement and Person Specification which is available via the application website (see below).
